We understand you have a lot of questions about how we approach surgery. Below are some FAQs that might help answer any questions or concerns. Please feel free to call us at (253) 503-0086 or text us at (253) 766-5535 for any other concerns you might have about your pet.
Grit City Vet requires that every patient coming in for a consultation should have their medical record submitted to our office via email. All pertinent information, such as biopsy results, x-rays and any lab work should be included.
Nope! All pets will go home the same afternoon that their procedure is performed. Unfortunately, we do not offer overnight care.
Every pet and every surgery is unique, so the total amount of time for surgery can vary. Typically, pets are anesthetized for roughly one hour, but the total anesthetic depends upon the exact procedure performed.
We understand that putting your pet through a surgery can be stressful for you and your pet. We want your pet to recover as calmly and quietly as possible during their after surgery. You are more than welcome to call to check on your pet at any time; however, we do not allow for visitation while your pet is hospitalized.
Formal discharge instructions are sent home with all patients. One of our nurses will review everything with you including; exercise restrictions, medications, physical therapy, bandage care, suture removal, etc. Any other questions you may have about post surgery recovery will also be answered at that time. If you are curious your pet’s post-op behavior is normal or if you have any other questions, call or text us!
Many medications can be given at the same time. We will discuss with you at discharge how all medications should be administered and answer any other questions that you may have.
The majority of surgeries typically require a minimum of two weeks for full recovery with very few exceptions. Exercise restriction includes: no running, jumping, or unlimited access to stairs. Rough play with children or other pets is also strongly discouraged during recovery. Your pet should be confined to a limited, safe environment and leash-walked several times a day for bathroom breaks only. There should be no unrestricted activity of any kind. Strict adherence to these restrictions will help your pet recover as quickly and as completely as possible.
Normally, skin incisions heal very rapidly. Salves, ointments, and creams can often be more irritating than just leaving them alone. If something needs to be applied to the incision, the staff will discuss this at your pet’s discharge.
Depending on the procedure, some bandages may need to be replaced immediately. In other cases, a wet bandage can be worse than no bandage at all! Our staff will review this at the time of your pet’s discharge.
This can be completely normal! It is not uncommon for pets to take 24-48 hours to have a normal bowel movement after surgery. If your pet is straining to defecate or having diarrhea, please contact your primary veterinarian or our office.
For most, healthy pets, undergoing anesthesia an additional time within a short timeframe does not carry an increased risk. As long as your pet did not have any adverse reactions to anesthesia, it is generally safe to undergo anesthesia again.
Please feel free to call us if you have any additional problems associated with your surgery. You may also call your primary veterinarian. If you feel that the problem may be an emergency, please contact the nearest emergency hospital.
Payment is due at the time services are rendered. We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Amex) and cash. We are currently looking into accepting Care Credit, ScratchPay and CherryPay.
